We were given the brief to create a new space that was individual and appealing to children and youths of all ages. There were also issues of antisocial behaviour at the recreation ground which needed to be addressed in the design.

Changing the apparent shape of the site and adding a vertical element was a fundamental part of the design. Incorporating a unique 'stockade' around the climbing equipment created a focal centre for the play area.

Incorporating inclusive play elements met criteria set by the Aiming High fund, and also created a well balanced play area.

During the design process we liaised with the Thames Valley Police Crime Prevention Design Officer for South Oxfordshire. Site security has been enhanced through the maintenance of site lines, controlling access and discouraging unwanted congregation.
